Southern Glaciers Tour

Book Now

Turnagain Arm, Portage Valley, Glaciers and Wildlife!

This full-day tour will take us from Anchorage, southeast along the Turnagain Arm of Cook Inlet.  We often see Dahl Sheep, mountain goat, moose, beluga whales, bald eagles, both black and brown bears, and, at times, other wildlife along the way.  We'll visit Portage Valley, the isthmus that connects the mainland of Southcentral Alaska with the Kenai Peninsula.  Portage Valley is home to multiple glaciers, a few of which are visible along our journey on any given day.

Itinerary

A Tent City Tours guide will pick you and your group up at your hotel by 8am the day of your tour.   We'll make several stops as we travel south, to take full advantage of the best wildlife viewing opportunities.  We'll spend time in Portage Valley where, depending on conditions, we'll see several glaciers which could include Explorer, Middle, Byron, Burns and Portage Glaciers.  As an option, you may be able to add time at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, Whittier, the Alyeska Tram, or Portage Valley Glacier Cruise to your tour -  fees for these are not included.  Please contact us in advance if you'd like to  plan these additions.  You can expect to be back at your hotel between 3 & 4pm.

additional points to note:

  • This tour is less restrictive in terms of schedule than our other tours.  If you'd like to go TODAY, but online booking is closed, give us a call to book in-person.  907-302-0245
  • We'll cover a fairly wide geographic area, you'll want to be prepared for varying weather conditions.
  • Dress in layers.  When the weather turns out a little different than forecast, the sun comes out, or wind picks up, the ability to adjust to the conditions can make your time out much more enjoyable.
  • Bring a small backpack or other means of carrying the few things you may want to keep available while we're out; a hat, sunglasses, water bottle and your preferred bug spray and sunscreen for example.
  • Bring your shades.  With over 20 hours of light per day, its' a good idea to keep your eyes protected.
  • We'll have bottled water, bug spray and sunscreen in the van.  You're welcome to bring your preferred variety.
  • Feel free to give us a call if you have additional questions or concerns.
